Amazon FBA Fees in the US (2026) — Referral, Fulfillment & Storage
Understand Amazon FBA referral fees, fulfillment charges, and how US sellers estimate true net profit per SKU — plus a free FBA calculator.
Two fees on every FBA sale — referral and fulfillment
Amazon FBA in the United States combines marketplace commission with logistics. On each sale, Amazon typically deducts a referral fee — a category-based percentage of your item price — and an FBA fulfillment fee that covers picking, packing, shipping to the customer, and customer service for that order. Storage bills monthly for inventory sitting in a fulfillment center, and long-term storage surcharges can apply to slow movers.
New sellers often compare only referral percentages and ignore fulfillment, which can exceed referral on small, light items sold at low price points. The FBA US calculator on FeeAndProfit separates referral and fulfillment so you see which bucket erodes margin.
Referral fees by product category
Referral fees in 2026 vary widely: many consumer categories cluster between 8% and 15%, while apparel, accessories, and some specialty verticals can differ. Amazon publishes rate cards by category; minimum referral charges can apply on very low item prices.
Category accuracy matters as much here as on eBay. Misclassifying a product can mean repricing later when Amazon reclassifies your ASIN. Select the closest category in our calculator to stress-test price before you ship inventory to FBA.
FBA fulfillment: size tiers and weight
Fulfillment fees depend on product size tier (small standard, large standard, small oversize, etc.) and shipping weight. A pocketable SKU under a pound behaves very differently from a kitchen appliance. Amazon’s tables update periodically — especially around peak season — so sellers repricing Q4 inventory should rerun numbers when rate cards change.
If you do not yet know your exact tier, start with a conservative large-standard assumption for anything not clearly envelope-sized. Better to overestimate fulfillment in planning than to discover $3 per unit eaten on launch week.
Storage and inventory risk
Monthly inventory storage fees accrue per cubic foot, with higher rates in Q4 for US fulfillment centers. Inventory aged 271+ days can trigger aged inventory surcharges on top of storage. These are not per-order deductions in Seller Central’s fee preview — they hit on separate statements — but they belong in true SKU economics for replenishment decisions.
Our per-order calculator does not project storage months in advance; treat storage as a carrying cost when deciding how many units to send. Slow SKUs with heavy cubic size are often better FBM candidates even if referral is identical.
FBA vs FBM on the same ASIN
Fulfillment by Merchant avoids FBA fulfillment and storage but still pays referral on most categories. You gain control of shipping and can win on oversized or fragile items where FBA fees dominate. You lose Prime badge eligibility unless enrolled in Seller Fulfilled Prime, which has its own performance requirements.
Run the same item price and COGS through both the FBA and FBM US calculators. Add your real outbound shipping cost on FBM. The higher net tells you which channel fits that SKU — many US catalogs are mixed, not all-FBA or all-FBM.
Worked example: $24.99 kitchen gadget
Imagine a gadget you wholesale at $6, sell at $24.99, standard-size FBA. Referral at 15% removes roughly $3.75; fulfillment might take another $3.50–$4.50 depending on tier. Before COGS you are already near $8–$9 off the top. Subtract product cost and inbound shipping to FBA, and net might land in single-digit dollars — acceptable at volume, painful if returns spike.
Enter $24.99, your COGS, and category in the calculator below. Tweak price until margin hits your target. If only a $3 price increase moves you from loss to profit, your catalog is fee-sensitive — optimize packaging dimensions before you scale ads.
